23 Menu When I was a kid I was always surprised by my friends who had people coming over to fix stuff. I never understood why their dad just didn’t do it. Each time our heater broke, my dad fixed it, and when it finally died for good, my dad let me help while while him and his buddy installed a brand new furnace for the whole house. When the blistering summer, makes you feel like you are in a Georgia hvac school final a/c exam, finally took it’s toll on our old small a/c unit, again my dad got in there and fixed, and along the way continued my hvac education by teaching me how to put in a thermostat that controlled the whole system. My dad got his first education in hvac in the Midwest , where he faced the frostbitten Ohio winters. He ended up in L.A., where I don’t think an old grizzled HVAC tech, with an Arizona HVAC education from Phoenix could have withstood the summer August heat we had in L.A. The power of an HVAC certification to be able to fix and install heating and cooling items has a tremendous amount of value. Not even trying to exaggerate the importance, every year when the education of the hvac techs of the western states is tested, you will hear about people who lost their lives, literally because they could not stay warm or cool. Sponsored Ad The traditional university systems of our country, in my personal opinion have offered a lot of false hope to the American public, as they teach broad theoretical concepts that have not been very successful for a lot of Americans in putting food on the table. Even a mid-Atlantic educated HVAC tech , working in the basement of a New York skyscraper, will at least eat. An HVAC certification, following a proper HVAC training program , allows a student to learn practical, valuable skills, that can be used to help others the day they get certified. I personally am very proud of the skills I have acquired. I am proud of knowing simple things such as the fact that if all the air filters in a house clog up, the drag on the motor of the a/c unit is so strong, that the motor will burn out often requiring an entirely new 3 ton unit. I am proud of knowing hot to program a modern thermostat with all of its computerized functions, and how to set it to save a family sometimes thousands of dollars a year. Right out of high school I went into college, but living in California, in retrospect I would have benefited by just going straight into one of the many California HVAC certification programs. These are practical skills that as a father I can teach to my kids, and use to help other families improve their lives. Our country is massive enough that from the New England Educated HVAC techs facing the frigid winter temperature of the East, to the Pacific Northwest HVAC certified techs helping people stay warm and dry through the wet cold winters, to the Southwest trained HVAC techs keeping folks alive against 120 degree heat, there is plenty of hostile environment to fight against for everyone to have a piece of the battle. Being an HVAC certified technician is also a starting point to having the opportunity to own your own business. With the skills learned, and hard work, you have the opportunity if you choose to head out on your own, and develop the American dream of creating your own heating and air conditioning business. As a part of a larger organization, there is a tremendous diversity of directions to head in. The first biggest division is simply residential or commercial. If you choose the residential direction you have the personal fulfillment of going into people’s homes, often at times that they are suffering during extremes in weather, and solve one of the fundamental problems of being alive, which is simply maintaining a livable temperature in the house. If you do your job really well, you will also be able to identify small improvements, such as filter cleaning and replacement, that if done now and on a regular basis, can save them thousands of dollars in the future. Being able to consult with them on their programmable settings allows them to save massive amounts of personal income by the reduced costs on gas and electric. If you choose the commercial path after graduation, the opportunities are as endless as there are industries. You could end up as an HVAC tech in Juneau Alaska working on a heating unit for an oil company to keep their workers alive during the toughest winters, or end up in Alabama after a complete HVAC education in the South , fixing skyscrapers working on units as big as some people’s houses. In the tech industry, many technical processes need to operate within very narrow temperature requirements, so your job could involve monitoring and adjusting highly sensitive heating and cooling units to maintain the required environments. Even the field of agriculture has it’s greenhouses which use large heating units to maintain specific temperatures to allow plants to grow out of season. The unsung hero of the HVAC field is the ventilation. It is without saying that fresh air delivered to a human body is vital to survive. In industrial settings, the ventilation may even be required for the workers to survive, by keeping toxic gases from building up. Ventilation systems also have tremendous health consequences due to the potential build ups of molds or bacteria in them which are even capable of threatening people’s lives if not maintained and working properly. As long as mankind needs to live at about 70 degrees Fahrenheit, we are going to have a continued need for people who are hvac certified to be able to install and fix the HVAC units that are going to keep this world at that temperature.
